We are delighted to announce the appointment of Nick Hamshaw as the Founding Head of 1729 Maths School, the newest member of the Mill Hill Education Group. Nick took up the role on 1 September and will work closely with David Benson, Head of Mill Hill School, Dr Susannah Abbott, Head of Belmont, Mill Hill Prep, and our wider Advisory Group. Together, they will shape the future of the UK’s first specialist mathematics school for 11–18-year-olds, whose mission is to identify, nurture, and develop world-class mathematical talent.
Nick brings exceptional experience as a mathematician, teacher, and school leader. With over a decade in senior leadership, he has served as Academic Deputy Head at St Albans High School for Girls and Senior Deputy Head at The Haberdashers’ Boys’ School. Earlier in his career, he led mathematics departments at both Oundle School and Haberdashers’ Boys’, working with the brightest pupils and fostering a deep culture of problem-solving and intellectual curiosity.
Reflecting on his new role, Nick said: “I am excited to build a community of deep learners who are inspired by one another and motivated to explore the far-reaching applications of mathematics. At 1729, our aim is to create an environment where gifted young mathematicians are challenged, supported, and encouraged to pursue their individual passions while learning together.”
For Nick, becoming the Founding Head of 1729 Maths School is a dream opportunity—a chance to unite his lifelong passion for mathematics with his extensive leadership experience. He looks forward to guiding the school’s development and embracing the challenges and rewards that this unique role will bring.
